Sun protection for mature skin

If there's one product that should be in every toiletry bag, regardless of the time of year, it's sunscreen. But when it comes to sensitive or mature skin, not just any formula will do. These skin types need protection that not only shields them from UVA and UVB rays but also respects their delicate nature and provides extra anti-aging care.
As time passes, our skin undergoes natural changes. Collagen production decreases, elasticity diminishes, and age spots and wrinkles can appear. That's why, at this stage when the skin's protective mechanisms weaken, sun protection is more important than ever, to prevent UV rays from further accelerating aging and causing irreversible damage.
The key is to choose sunscreens with mineral or physical filters, such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they are less irritating and more gentle on reactive skin. Additionally, our advice is to opt for formulas enriched with antioxidants, such as vitamin E or green tea extract, which combat oxidative stress and strengthen the skin barrier.
Keep in mind that for mature skin, a good sunscreen must go beyond protection: hydration, repair, and prevention are essential. Opt for light, easily absorbed textures that don't leave white residue or a heavy feeling, and prioritize formulas with hyaluronic acid or niacinamide to keep skin supple and radiant.

How do we protect mature skin from sun damage?
In addition to using adequate sunscreen for mature skin, there are other habits we can incorporate to maximize our skin care:
- Wear hats and sunglasses: Complement your sun protection with accessories that block direct sunlight on your face. A chic hat and sunglasses always add style to any outfit!
- Avoid the most intense sun hours: Try to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest. If you need to be outdoors, be sure to generously apply your sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours as usual.
- Maintain a diet rich in antioxidants: Foods rich in antioxidants help protect the skin from within. A healthy diet is the perfect complement to your mature skin care!
Common myths about sun protection for mature skin
You may have heard some myths that can confuse you when choosing a sunscreen for mature skin. Let's clear up some doubts.
-
"If it's cloudy, I don't need sun protection"
False! UV rays can penetrate clouds and cause damage to your skin. It is always necessary to apply your sunscreen for mature skin, regardless of the weather and even indoors (to protect yourself from the visible light emitted by your electronic devices). -
"My makeup with SPF is enough"
False! Although makeup with SPF helps, it does not replace a specific sunscreen. The amount of makeup we apply is not enough to provide adequate sun protection, much less for mature skin.
The key to maintaining healthy skin is consistency. Making sun protection a daily habit will make a big difference in the appearance and health of your skin in the long run:
- Incorporate sun protection into your daily routine: Place your sunscreen in a visible spot so you don't forget it. Make applying and reapplying your mature skin sunscreen as natural as brushing your teeth.
- Share the habit with friends and family: Encourage your loved ones to protect their skin! Together you can remind each other of the importance of adequately protecting your skin and support each other on the path to healthier skin.
The use of sunscreen for mature skin is essential to maintain healthy and beautiful-looking skin.
By understanding the specific needs of mature skin and choosing appropriate products, we can enjoy aging naturally and without worries. It's time to take care of our skin and look spectacular at any age!
Now, how do we know if our sunscreen is effective or has lost its properties?
A sunscreen can lose its characteristics and effectiveness over time, especially if it is not stored under suitable conditions. "To ensure your sunscreen remains effective, it is best to store it in a cool, dry place, protected from direct light.
Here are some signs that a sunscreen has expired or lost its properties:
1. Change in texture
"If the consistency becomes more liquid or, conversely, more viscous, has separated, or becomes difficult to apply, it may be spoiled."
2. Change in color and odor
"If you notice that the cream has a strange odor or has changed color, it is best not to use it. These changes may indicate that the formula has deteriorated or has been contaminated, which could reduce its effectiveness or sensory properties and in some cases, cause skin irritation."
3. Loss of efficacy
If after using it you notice that it doesn't protect you as well as before, it could be a sign that it has lost its protective capacity.
4. Dosing problems
"If you detect problems in the product's dosage (difficulty spraying, clogged pump, etc.), it may be due to product instability."
5. PAO (Period After Opening)
"Always check the PAO symbol of your sunscreen, which indicates the number of months until expiration after opening. It is recommended not to use a sunscreen from year to year, as the product has usually already been subjected to stressful conditions (high temperatures, direct sunlight, or high humidity), which accelerate its aging. Therefore, for sunscreens, the PAO should be less than 12 months."
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how long you can stay in the sun before your skin gets sunburned. An SPF of 30 means that a person can stay in the sun 30 times longer without getting sunburned. An SPF of 50 means that a person can stay in the sun 50 times longer without getting sunburned. Therefore, SPF 50 is more effective at protecting your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays.
It is important to choose the right SPF sunscreen for your skin. If you have fair or sensitive skin, you should use a sunscreen with a high SPF. On the other hand, if you have dark or tanned skin, an SPF of 30 would be sufficient. Additionally, it is important to remember that the SPF number does not indicate the amount of UV protection a product provides. SPF refers only to the time you can spend in the sun without getting burned.

Did you know?
According to study data, Spain leads Europe in sun protection, with 65% of the population reporting "always or often" using photoprotection. This percentage is significantly higher than Italy, which ranks second with 51%.
The study also reveals a high degree of awareness of the risks of sun exposure, with 70% taking into account its associated risks, especially burns (92%), developing skin cancer (90%), and skin aging (87%).
Furthermore, there is a deseasonalization of consumption, as it is used for more months, with greater intensity from March to September, and is present in other products such as moisturizers, anti-aging creams, or makeup.
